Please explain this debounce schematic?

The capacitor is smoothing out the bounces from the switch just as the condenser in a points ignition system in an older car. The Schmitt trigger is "belt and braces" because the input has hysteresis between positive and negative thresholds which is capable of changing a slowly changing input signal into a sharply defined jitter free output.
